Greenville break-ins and home security
Greenville Police Chief Howie Thompson told City Council that 2025 crime reached a 25-year low while the city kept growing. Mid-2026 figures showed total crime down about 17 percent year to date. Those are citywide numbers. They are not a reason to leave a West End side door unlocked on a Tuesday while you sit on I-85.
Chief Thompson reported that from 2000 to 2025 the city grew from about 58,700 residents to about 79,200 while crime incidents fell from 5,529 to 2,502. The per-capita rate dropped from 94 incidents per 1,000 residents to 33. Between 2021 and 2025, violent crime fell 27 percent and property crime fell 24 percent. Those counts mix Downtown, West End, Overbrook, Eastside, and Southside. A quieter street is not 24/7 monitoring, and a neighbor on the porch is not an ADT operator. We do not publish neighborhood crime rates.
Direction on the citywide mix is real. Mayor Knox White is in office. Chief Thompson has spoken to the numbers. The reason people still order is occupancy: porch packages, a tried door, and houses that sit empty after drop-off or a commute on I-85, I-385, or Augusta Road.
Boxes on West End, Overbrook, and Downtown porches
Walkable streets are why people add a doorbell. West End, Overbrook, Hampton-Pinckney, and Downtown houses collect boxes on porches while owners are at work, on I-85, or downtown. A camera you check yourself is useful. It is not the same as ADT calling you when a door opens.
The system is for the hours no one is looking out the window — not a claim that Greer or Five Forks is dangerous.
School calendars empty more houses than crime maps do
Greenville County Schools drop-off empties in-city two-stories. Hillcrest, Riverside, Mauldin High, and Travelers Rest calendars empty Simpsonville, Five Forks, Mauldin, and Travelers Rest until pickup. A Furman class day empties Travelers Rest and Paris Mountain doors the same way. That is when people want the system armed.
Q1 2026 crime was down more than 20 percent citywide, with property crime down 23 percent. We do not invent a 2025 homicide count. Confirm the ZIP. Order for the hours you are gone.
